When Mormon asks your Fav name of Jesus besides Savior...
Mormon Questions
Q: I know someone who ran into some Mormons the other evening, and they posed an interesting question many of us Christians need to be prepared to respond to.
Her report:
Noting the cultists always want to chat and ask if you go to church etc. The believer is usually friendly and talk about their own commitment to Christ when engaging cultists.
After a short chat, as they left one turned back [trying to lure her] and said, “oh just real quick, if you had one favorite name for Jesus what would it be? Other than Savior/Redeemer?”
She said it was so odd and felt like a trick. She was trying to search her brain for the reason they would ask this. [She did note she knows Jehovah Witnesses always want to emphasize Jehovah].
What about Mormons? I know they are also trying to get away from the “nickname” of Mormons since 2016. And with a heavy lds presence in her area she is always trying to learn how to engage them.
What are your thoughts, and whats the trap here theyre trying to get people into by that question??
A: Well heres a few considerations.
They will be looking to steer the convo to say "Son of God". To emphasis "Son". By using the question as a lead-in to talking about how their favourite name is "Brother" and then on to talking about how they believe we're all God's children... [saying] "just like Jesus".
But since they believe Jesus is a created Being, theyll then focus on trying to say how "He is Son" in order to bring into question His eternality - specifically and trinitarian beliefs generally. [To decieve into their views].
You could avoid their trap and respond - "Jesus' most used reference to Himself is Son of Man. But He is way more then that".
*The, inreference to Daniel ch 7
13“I was watching in the night visions,
And behold, One like the Son of Man,
Coming with the clouds of heaven!
He came to the Ancient of Days,
And they brought Him near before Him.
14Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,
That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve(the same Hebrew word can be interpreted as worship) Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
Which shall not pass away,
And His kingdom the one
Which shall not be destroyed.
We often have overlooked the phrase, "coming on the clouds of heaven" but in truth it is integral to the passages. We see Jesus ascend to Heaven on clouds. In revelation He's on clouds. Why is this an emphasis. We find the answer in Deut 33
26“There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, Who rides the heavens to help you, And in His excellency on the clouds.
If you say 'I would probably say, "The same term Thomas used when referring to Jesus after His resurrection... 'My Lord and my God.' *And then note "which is accurate since Jesus declared Himself as I AM which is the way God revealed himself in the OT, indicating himself as the eternal living God. And Jesus said he is One with the Father, thus pointing to the triunitarian nature of God....On earth one shadow example we have is a family. One is called "Family" when there are 3. They are three individual beings of the same nature. They are not one person but three, but together are called Family. God is three beings who are eternally One in essence and nature. There is only one true and living God... and God himself revealed this to us."

You could also instead reply:
1.If someone asked me that question I would say that "Provider of Spiritual Life; the only way to Heaven." ... Then ask if they have been born again. π
2. Or say -The Good Shepherd. And why? Because Jesus said no one but God is good just as Scripture says that. So He simply MUST be God if He was good. And He must be good if He could pay for our sins instead of being burdened by His own.
There are tons of Old Testament verses and even New Testament ones that the Holy Spirit has blinded both Mormons and Jehovah witness to. Ones that even their altered scripture has neglected to realize enough to change. And you can point out "all the Bible verses about only God being good and on man not being able to pay the sins for another all show that if they follow their logic, then they have no Savior and are going to hell because there was no one to take the punishment for their sins. They have no hope without recognizing Jesus as God. If He was just man, He wasn’t good and He couldn’t take the punishment of another."
There are no if ands or buts about it. I haven’t found any of them prepared to address that and saw it break through a lot of their walls.
But you can continue to say, "if today you turn from the lies and deception of the cult you are in and their altered Bible, if you repent of your sins, including your idolatry, and place your trust in the true Jesus Christ, who was and is and always will be of the triune Godhead, the one who came to earth put on human flesh, lived among us, and as the sinless 2nd Adam, perfectly obeyed the Law in our place to die on the cross bearing our sins to trade places with us, to make us right with God by that sacrifice, death and resurrection... if you repent and trust in Him then God will save you and you will be born again by God, transformed in the inner man, recieve spiritual life, the righteous nature of Christ, and eternal life.
Would you like to do that today?"
3. If you want to say to their original question "Well to me my favorite is Savior Redeemer. And that is important"...
From there [or any of the above, or the below final response idea] you can move to the below π convo/explanation.
4. You could say
"Everlasting father -Isaiah 9:6" that will stump them.
For context GotQuestions explains this isnt in relation to trinitarianism.
*So be prepared to answer/explain this. Jesus said- Repent and believe the Gospel. He also said you have to be born again. Scripture says we need to be Saved. And the Bible clearly explains how."
πππYou could then immediately say to them say: “I noticed that YOU referred to Jesus Christ as your ‘Savior’. Do you claim to be presently saved by Him?”
Of course they have to redefine “salvation” in order to answer in the affirmative.
Christians need to follow up and ask: “But do you NOW, (present tense) have eternal life?”
*The Mormon, according to his church’s teachings, can NEVER say yes! Eternal life must be earned by them with the “help” from the Mormon Jesus of course! Very deceptive and very confusing to many who don’t know their doctrine.
They cant answer 'yes'. Their religion requires doing many things... it takes time. It is also done by works [which are done by a sinners dirty hands, and in an attempt to bribe the Judge of the universe].
If they say no or i dont know,
Ask them...
"Do you know what the Bible say on how a person gets saved?" ..." let me put it this way....
If I had a knife in my back and had 3 minutes to live, how would you tell me how to get into Heaven?"
Theyll say you cant because you have to do works.
So move to show how a sinful person cant do good works [* "Only someone perfect could do good works, but all human works are done as a sinners with dirty hands, and is an attempt to bribe the Judge of the universe with poop."], and then say that "God has clearly told us in the Scriptures that God who is sinless does the saving. Jesus said in the original Greek... we need to be born again 'from above'. Jesus is of the eternal Godhead, and he came to earth put on human flesh and as the perfect God-Man he did what was required to bring salvation to humanity. πThrough Him salvation comes, πby obeying the biblical Gospel.
So....Currently you dont have eternal life, you dont have salvation, you arent born again, and if you die today you will face God as your judge and will be rightly sentenced for your sin crimes against Him.
If you have a different jesus, a different god and follow other writings then you are also idolators - who also added to Gods Word and are all under God's wrath - and will be judged - and sent to eternal Hell. You are in serious trouble, so you need to flee that cult and turn to the true God, believe in the true Jesus, true Scriptures and obey the true Gospel - today.
If you want to get right with God, I will be happy to share the true Gospel with you. Scripture says it has the power to save. Do you want to he saved today?"
If any say yes, then go through the good test with them.
If not, end the convo by saying, "I hope you will think about what I shared with you today. It is no coincidence we met, clearly God brought me to reach you today. So, I hope you will turn from the doctrines of demons taught in your cult, and turn to the true God & Savior. Tomorrow isnt guaranteed, so get right with Him today."
Comment:
LDS christology is really really twisted. So this makes their trinity theology wack too. They don’t recognize Christ as being "eternally fully God" and "fully man" (since coming to earth as Jesus). They see Him as being fully man that BECAME like God.
So the trick in that question is seeing if you recognize and call Jesus Lord, etc. seems like a trick to get you to agree to their views on the Trinity, or decieve the naive into it.
I was raised in this cult, was excommunicated when I was 14 because I refused to recognize their “prophet” as true and as equal to Jesus Christ and God. I just couldn’t. And I still won’t. I spent quite a few years in my teens and early twenties untangling these lies and false teachings and relearning the truth of God’s Word
